Sprint has started selling the HTC Hero for $179.99. However, a new Android Smartphone will be arriving on the Now Network on November 1st for the same price. The Samsung Moment promises to be just as exciting as the HTC Hero. The presence of two Android phones on Sprint's line-up provides some variety for consumers, but choosing between them can be tricky. Let's compare the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment to see if one is a better fit for your needs. Design/Form Factor: The HTC Hero sports a flat bar design dominated by a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, beveled edges and an angled bottom contoured to fit against the face. On the other hand, the Samsung Moment offers a QWERTY slider design that favors users who prefer to use a physical keyboard. The dimensions of these Android Smartphones are roughly the same but the Moment (161 g) is a bit heavier than the Hero (135 g). Display/Touchscreen: HTC's Android phone features a 3.2-inch HVGA screen with 320 x 480 px, 65,000 colors, accelerometer and compass. The Moment sports a 3.2-inch AMOLED touch screen display with 320 x 480 px, 1.67 million colors, accelerometer and proximity sensor. In this department, the Samsung Moment has a slight edge because the display offers more colors and wider viewing angles. User Interface: The Hero is the first handset to offer HTC's Sense UI which allows users to view Facebook status updates, photos with their text messages, emails and call history in a single view. It also provides widgets that can be placed right on the home screen to switch scenes or view local time, weather and maps. The Samsung Moment brings an adaptation of the TouchWiz user interface that offers easy access to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Camera: The Samsung Moment is equipped with a decent 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, zoom auto-focus and video recording. However, the HTC Hero outclasses the Moment in the camera the department with its 5.0 megapixel lense shooter with zoom, auto-focus and video capture. Processor: The HTC Hero is equipped with a 528MHz MSM7201A processor but the Samsung Moment is one of the fastest Android phones with its 800 Mhz processor. With Samsung’s faster processor, we expect the Moment will offer snappier performance. Memory: Both of these Android Smartphones have 512 MB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD cards. Battery Power: The Sprint HTC Hero is powered by a 1,500 mAh Li-Ion with up to 7.83 hours of talk time (real-world results have differed considerably) and 440 hours in standby. The battery information for the Samsung Moment has not been revealed, but it is expected to be equipped a 1,4400 mAh Li-Ion power source with up to 5.5 hours of talk time. This isn’t surprising considering the differences in both processor and battery. HTC Hero certainly has the edge in this department. Conclusion: All in all we like both Android Smartphones and we think users can’t go wrong by choosing either. If a QWERTY keyboard is a necessity, and you want the fastest processor, than the Samsung Moment is the obvious choice. On the other hand, if you are a fan of the svelt HTC Sense UI, and dig the camera upgrades, the Hero certainly won’t disappoint. Update: Also, check out our Samsung Moment and Motorola Devour battle! Update II: Thanks for all of the comments below. We appreciate your handset feedback and reviews! |

Hero or Moment?
HELP!! Ok I have to make a decision in 2 days. I bought the Hero but am having trouble typing on the screen. My children say I really need to think about the Moment with the keyboard. Does anyone out there think the moment would be easier for this grandma to use. I just want to be able to take pictures, check email and be on the web. I don't do facebook, tweeter or care about the games and music. I just need a good, user-friendly phone. Now I have to make a decision and my 30 days is up really soon!. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Hero Vs. Moment
I've got the Hero. My wife has the Moment. She loves the slide out keyboard. I don't really care for the on-screen keyboard on the Hero, thinking the Moment wins in that department. The Moment is definitely faster, especially on boot up. But the Hero has the HTC apps which make for a nice experience. It's sometimes hard to wake up the Moment to answer a call. The voice recognition STINKS on the Hero, but it's pretty good on the Moment. Don't really notice much difference in the screens, even though the Moment is supposed to be much better. The multi-touch on the Hero is awesome, especially for web browsing. Both of them absolutely STINK for using Hotmail. They don't integrate with Hotmail contacts or calendar, and they don't offer a true 2-way sync. Suppose they work better with GMail, but I don't like GMail.
I've had the lockups on my Hero, and the slow response. Had to reboot several times in the last week. Only had to reboot the Moment once. Battery life on both of them is terrible. Horrible. You have to charge them every day, twice a day if you use GPS or WiFi. Both of them have the volume control in a dumb place, and I always hit it when I rotate the phone to landscape for texting. Web browser and full HTML email is great on both, if only I could get true 2-way Hotmail integration. YouTube app is OK, but video quality is poor.
Overall, I think I'm sending the Hero back. I'm going to trade it for the HTC Touch Pro 2. Hotmail and Voice Dialing are too important to me. My wife is keeping the Moment. Hotmail isn't important to her on her phone, and she likes all the apps and the slide out keyboard. She doesn't use voice dialing as much as me. The Hero is definitely smaller and lighter, with a much nicer feel to the device. Keyboard is more important to her.
moment vs hero
Ok so I have the moment now but I've wanted the hero. Of course no phone is perfect... so by opinion which one is better to go with?
Hero huge waste of money
The Hero looks like it would be the perfect phone but after two weeks of texting suddenly it would not receive ANY texts nor would it let me delete any. I had only sent and received maybe 500. I took it to the sprint store and they couldn't do a single thing to get it back so I could receive texts so they gave me a totally new HTC Hero. So I always deleted texts when it hit the 100 mark, but sadly two months later I'm experiencing the same issues. Some texts never come in while one literally came in two weeks late. I went into the sprint store once more and they rebooted the entire phone. I'm still having the same issues. I use texting a lot for my work, and I was assured that this phone could handle at least a modest amount of texting.
Now Sprint says that it's past the 30 day mark and they say they can't do much more to the phone besides update it...when there are no more updates for the phone left.
My old 2003 Sprint phone was better than this, and I'm hoping if I bitch them out enough they will give me a totally new phone.
Besides texting the phone is great, but I was assured this phone could handle large amounts of texts which is obviously a big lie.
htc hero
I have had my hero for a few months now. I switched from the Palm Pre. I really like the hero. Yes, the battery life is low, but if you use the task killer, it helps with that. Using the data/internet will kill the battery quickly, but just talking/texting, I haven't had a problem. I really like the shortcuts that you can use on the screens to call/text people. That is one thing that keeps me with the hero. The internet speed is pretty good. I would like to have a slide out keyboard, but the touch input isn't bad. Obviously, no phone will be perfect. I like the android format.
I considered going to the moment when I am available for the upgrade just for the keyboard, but I don't want to lose my shortcuts etc. I will say though, the Palm Pre picture taking ability (3.2) was much better than the 5.0 that the hero has. I actually keep my pre and use it for pictures only. I have not had to replace the hero for any software issues, only because I cracked the camera lens when I dropped it, so it was operator erroe, not device error. This phone gets great call service. I don't know about the moment, but I am afraid that it won't be as good. Where I work, many times we will jump to roaming. When I had the pre, it constantly wsa jumping and I couldn't make or receive calls very well. The hero has never ahad a problem. It rarely goes to roaming. I don't know why that is, but I am pleased. I have a friend who is moving to sprint from ATT and is thinking about the moment. She is in the same situation that I am with location. Can any one tell me if the moment has service (calling) issues?
Thank you!

samsung moment vs htc hero
I havehad BOTH the htc hero and samsung moment I LOVED the moment except for the fact that it is alomst as thick and long as a remote!!!! that sucks! Also that I had to get a new moment a week after getting it the speaker on the ear piece sounded like I was talkin into a coke can. Often times wit the moment I could not hang up my phone it just would not let me. I would have to take the battery out. My HTC is much smaller and I feel it does less than my moment it has a nice feel, but I miss the flash on the camera! My moment had a nice flash! the phones both are nice I love the facebook sync on both of them!!!! But I dont want to have the brick in my purse so I think I am sticking wit my HTC.. just wish it had a keyboard...:(

moment vs hero
The same thing happened to me on my Hero. I think it is a glitch with all Android phones.
compare samsung moment to htc hero
I just purchased an HTC Hero phone and whenever I am done talking or texting or whatever, I always, always, turn the phone off before I place it in it's case, but it turns itself on at times. Its driving me nuts. And the time on the home screen is off by two or so hours at times and then all of a sudden it resets itself to the correct time. HEEEEEEELP Has anyo
ne had these issues?
Each time it turns itself on, it's on Nav, or message, or you name it. It's always something different.
Samsung unlocks itself and goes to text message
To the post that stated his Samsung unlocks itself. I had ths same problem with my Samsung Exclaim. The problem was that if the phone is put next to a magnet, it unlocked and went to text message. My carrying case on my belt had a magnetic cover. Took the phone back to Sprint and they compared to another Exclaim and said it was a manufacture design flaw...then they wanted to charge me $30 to swap it out (I had only just purchased it two weeks prior). Went to Verizon and they explained to me that the magnet was supposed to have the opposite effect. When you put the phone in your carrying case, the magnet is supposed to automatically lock the phone so you do not accidentally bump it and make calls. Also as a side note: I have had three Samsung phones and all three had inferior signal strength (compared to the Sanyo's that we have). I like the Samsung phones, but wonky design and week signal won't cut it. I have to use my wife's Sanyo if I am working from my office downstairs...both phones are on the same network. Hope this helps.
i have help
the hero is always gunna be like an hour or whatever behind cause it has to refresh when you unlock it thats just how it works its not cause its messed up its just how the phone works!
HTC Hero, driving you nuts...
Sprint is aware of the issue. I have the same thing going on with both my and my wife's phones. Rather then using the "current city" which would change from town to town....sometimes correct and other times of by hours. The minutes were always correct and the small upper right time from Sprint was correct for both hour and minutes. I went to the store and finally a person there having the same phone advised me to choose "Denver, CO rather then "current city/location. 5He said his phone after some weeks just started showing all current cities (towns) as they would change by the GPS and they were then correct. Hope this helps. Also, be sure that you heve the latest firmware and look for the 2.X.X revisions coming out after January. It is said then the HTC widget will work as intended. If you need, please reply and possibly I'll exchange my tel.# for more clarity.
Hero with Text Issues
Is anyone having issues with Texting and the HERO? I'm on phone #3 with same issues.
HTC HERO
I bought a brand new HTC HERO in October. I loved HTC and upgraded from the Touch Pro to the HERO. HUGE MISTAKE!!! As of Dec.9, 2009 I have now had the original HERO and have been through three refurbished ones. Sprint cannot fix the data problems that this phone is having. And Tech support is not familiar enough with the error codes that the phone is giving them. SPRINT is now sending us a SAMSUNG MOMENT because they cannot resolve the issue with there network and the HERO. Again I have had the Touch Pro and except for battery life loved the phone and had no problems. I thought the HERO was going to be just as GREAT. What a huge dissappointment!!
RE: HTC
Most of the complaints I see on the HTC are common to HTC in general. They provide amazingly capable devices that are simply unreliable. Something like 6/10 or 8/10 are lemons...
I have had more HTC's replaced by Sprint than I can count. They have ALL had separate but equally unacceptable issues. Texting issues, contact issues, freezing etc. My current device cannot receive calls 50% of the time. It is an HTC Touch Diamond, as have been the last 5. HTC Mogul before that. I have ran into the same issues with both and Sprint. Despite the fact that it seems 'refurbished' really means 'we sent you somebody else's defective phone' the issue eventually becomes Sprint Communication's unwillingness to replace it anymore. They say 'well you have reached the maximum number of replacements' despite it being their fault. Of course I'm thinking 'no, you have sent me more defective devices than you are willing to admit'.
Bottom line, I will never own another HTC device. EVER.
Help with HTC Hero
Has anyone ever heard of Advanced task killer for the phone? I recently bought the Hero? The person that sold it to me downloaded it. Am a little challenged with this phone and still learning it. Does anyone know where I can get some help with all the apps, other than the book that comes with it? That one isn't worth the paper it is booked into. Also, does this phone come with a disk for the computer?
thanks
Advanced Task Killer
Go to the menu in your phone, scroll to market, click on market. Search for the application. Advanced Task Killer is the name of the application and it is a free application.
Advanced Task Killer
I highly recommend Advanced Task Killer. There are so many app that I forget the turn off that would keep running that I have no idea of and Task Killer turns then all off for you..
what were you expecting.
I don't have either phone yet. I am up for an upgrade soon and leaning toward the hero. I've read many many reviews on the Hero and the Moment and I think it's sily what these reviewers nit-pick about. Neither of these devices are perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect cell. They will fail at some point. It's a given. If you have sprint and are considering these phones relax. You probably are only going to be stuck with it for a year anyways. Then you'll be bitching about your hero or moment and looking for another "holy grail" of cell phones.
Iphone
The i-phone is anywhere near from perfect. 2 of my cousins have had it since it came out and they both have had to have it replace them multiple times. none of them are perfect but i couldnt be more content with my htc hero. ive had it since it came out in october and i still absolutely love it. worth every penny.
iphone complaint
iphone is the shit i've had the 3g and 3gs cause i had to update awsome phone but i love the android tecnology im going to get the hero because i like the full touch screen, and the bill is friendlier hated the most of the good apps u had to pay for thats why adroid is better and att wont see there first droid phone till july or august after the iphone contract expires
HTC hero vs. Samsung Moment
There is a perfect cell - its called iPhone.
I just can't justify paying AT&T's rediculous monthly fee's any longer and we be switching to the hero.
Minus the facebook integeration the iphone does it all with a simplistic interface, but who really cares about the facebook integration when "there's an app for that."
No Outlook Web Access...
No Outlook Web Access client, touch screen changes are a little slow, finger positioning on keyboard is not intuitive.
problems with the HTC
I have had the HTC Touch Pto for about two months. My sone and I both have it. I lives 3 hours away. I have had cell phones for about 13 years. I have never expeerienced so many dropped calls with any other company as with this phone and Sprint. My son and I are both having the same issues. The battery life is terrible. As a Realtor this phone puts me at a handicap. The screen is small with out the ability to increase the phone to a good size, the screen is constantly freezing up as well as heating up. The only reason i got this phgone when my family switched from tmobile to spring was because I needed a larger screen. It is the worst phone I have had yet.
Your HTC Touch Pro
Hopefully you know you can enlarge the screen by swirling your finger around the center dial because I have never had an issue with screen size.
HTC Touch Pro
For one, we werent even talking about the Touch Pro. You're talking about a windows mobile phone. Just like windows on your pc, its going to have issues, it always will. Thats why many people that didnt need it for business switched to a different device. Also you brought the first version instead of doing the smart thing and getting the second generation which is much better. First generations of anything are going to have issues. Now the issues yo have talked about minus the call drops were the same issues people had with the original HTC Touch. Even though i have never really had those issues myself with either phone. It messed up but not so much on the issues you are talking about. As the other poster said you are probably roaming which maybe why you are having call drops, your internet can even run slow if your not in a good location. Anyway we are talking about Android phones here, totally different ballpark. Stick to the subject.
Your HTC touch Pro...
Your HTC touch Pro is probably roaming...the reason for your phone heating up is because it is increasing power looking for a signal. It is freezing because you havent cleared your web cache and it is running out of internal memory. Im not sure how you expected to make the screen bigger, but judging from your spelling ability, I bet you this wont negatively impact your ability to sell a home.
I've heard that the...
I've heard that the Touch Pro 2 is much better than the original, but this review is about the Hero, so I don't know why you're posting here anyway.
7.83 hours of talk time on the hero?
The Hero barely makes it through a day with minimal usage...Had one for nearly a week now...This is with auto updates off, GPS off, blue tooth off, wifi off, email sync on 3 accounts at 30mins, and using an app to close all tasks when i'm done with anything...I've read that the moment seems to be rated at 5.5 hours talk time and the hero at 4...
Battery Life
There are many articles out there regarding the SMS app and how even when you are not using it it is running in the background. The phone is awake internally even though it looks asleep. This is a bug that sprint is working on. I downloaded Handcent from google apps and it works awesome. I just disabled the notification on the SMS program it came with and everything works great. I used this link to also help set better battery life. I to went from 8 hrs of minimal use to an entire day of moderate to heavy use without a recharge. Good Luck. This is the link
http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/art...
That's according to HTC
The battery info for the Hero is taken from the HTC website not from actual users. It should be taken with a grain of salt as it is the billed battery performance as claimed by the manufacturer. :)
With a grain of salt.
When ever you read specs like battery life, or miles per gallon you cant really take them literally. These are in best case situations. They hire the best test car drivers on the best roads and every thing to get that millage but in the real world you will be lucky to get that. Same thing with phones they turn off all the setting have perfect signal in their test zone with things like screen ear pieces and all that stuff on the min settings. And i think they only test the connection time the phone runs before the time and not when its transmitting each word they say and both directions to save juice.
