Smartphones have continued to evolve in 2011. This year we saw the arrival of powerful handsets with dual-core processors. The size and the technology of displays have also improved from the iPhone's "Retina Display" to Super AMOLED plus screens. 2011 was also the year for the arrival of major versions of smartphone operating systems such as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and iOS5.
So will smartphones continue to grow at the same rate next year? Early rumors and leaks indicate that 2012 will also be a big year for the smartphone industry. Nokia has already launched its Windows Phones and quad-core handsets for Android have already been leaked. Let's look at the rumored upcoming smartphones for 2012 to get a glimpse of the future super phones.
HTC Titan II: This AT&T-bound smartphone packs a powerful main camera. The Titan II will sport a 16 megapixel camera with an f/2.6 lens, dual-LED flashes and the ability to record video in 720p HD. Other features for this handset include a 4.7-inch display, dual-core 1.5GHz processors, a 1.3-megapixel user-facing camera and 4G Long Term Evolution support.
Sony Xperia Ion: This device is the first Sony LTE smartphone. The Ion features a 4.6-inch 720p HD Reality display, and a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU. It will be available at AT&T and will ship with support for the carrier's 4G LTE network. Other key features for this phone include 1 GB of RAM, 12.1 megapixel camera, FM radio with RDS, DLNA, and Android 2.3.
HTC Ville: This handset is rumored to feature a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor and a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display. Reports indicate that the Ville may be introduced at the Mobile World Congress and released on April 2012. Other rumored features for this upcoming smartphone for 2010 include a less than 8mm thick body, HTC Sense 4.0, a 1,650 mAh battery, HSPA+, and Beats Audio.
Galaxy Note for AT&T: This rumored LTE 4G phone for AT&T is rumored to feature a 5.3-inch 1280×800 Super AMOLED HD display, a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, and a four-button layout. It may be unveiled to the public on CES 20102 in January. It has also visited the FCC for approval of the carrier's bands.
Samsung Galaxy S III: The 20102 version of the popular Galaxy S line has already been featured in rumors. Some reports indicate that the Galaxy S II will ship with a 2.0 quad-core CPU with 1.5GB of RAM. This handset may be unveiled at the MWC in February 2012.
HTC Eternity: AT&T is rumored to offer this phone as the “HTC Congressional” and launch it on the first or second week of April. This phone may be HTC's flagship handset for the first half of 2012 and is expected to offer Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Beats Audio.
HTC Edge:This phone is rumored to be one of the first Android handsets to run on NVIDIA’s 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor. This upcoming smartphone for 20102 may also ship with a 4.7-inch 720p HD S-LCD, 32GB of built-in storage, Bluetooth 4.0, an 1,800 mAh battery, NFC, a rear 8-megapixel camera, and a 720p front-facing camera.
Amazon smartphone: Recent rumors indicate that the success of the Kindle Fire may push Amazon into the smartphone arena. The Kindle phone is expected to be launched in 4Q12 and may feature a TI OMAP 4 processor.
Nokia Lumia 900: This smartphone is rumored to be Nokia's flagship Windows Phone. Rumors indicate that it will be available in the U.S. in early 2012, possibly some time after CES in January. The leaked features for this handset include a 1.4GHz processor, a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display and an 8-megapixel camera.
Asus Padfone With Tegra 3: The Padfone is rumored to be unveiled at MWC 2012 in February. Rumors say that it will ship with a Tegra 3 chip. This phone was introduced last May but it seems that the Padfone will arrive next year. This handset is an Android smartphone that features a 4.3 inch touch display, a 5 megapixel camera, and a tablet dock.
Unnamed Panasonic Smartphone: Panasonic does not have a major presence in the smartphone market but the company still intends to make a statement next year. The manufacturer want to create a larger impact on the European smartphone market by unveiling a new phone. The handset has not been named but the main features have been unveiled. The phone will offer an "ultra-slim D-shaped" design with a slim bezel, a 4.3-inch qHD OLED screen, and NFC.
