AVOID THE REBATE: SNAG YOUR PALM PRE AT BEST BUY OR RADIOSHACK

If you plan to be in line on day one to be one of the first to snag a Palm Pre, you should probably try and avoid an official Sprint Store. If you're wondering where you should go instead, try your local Best Buy or RadioShack, where you'll be able to snag the webOS-powered device without having to deal with a pesky mail-in rebate.

Best Buy and RadioShack will both be offering the device for sale to new customers with an instant rebate deducted at the time of purchase. Can I have an Amen?

While your chances of getting a Palm Pre on launch day are potentially slim, this is the most cost effective way of obtaining the phone These mobile stores will absorb the initial cost of the device, pass the savings on to you instantly, and claim the rebate themselves down the line. Happily this has been a practice of Best Buy Mobile for some time now, and they've held an official anti-rebate stance for years.

Sprint stores will probably have more phones on hand at launch than resellers like Best Buy, so if you absolutely must have the Pre on Day 1 that's probably your best bet, but not necessarily your best buy (like what I did there?).

Seriously though, there are reports of some Best Buy Mobile stores already starting a wait list for the phone, but that seems to be a store by store practice and officially Best Buy has stated they will not begin any sort of numbered Pre reservation until June 6th. Still, it wouldn't hurt to call your local stores and find out what they have to say on the matter and whether or not they'll be stocking the Pre on launch day.

How long do you think until Sprint officially ditches that rebate altogether? It's by far been the most often stated criticism levied at Sprint since the news Tuesday of Pre pricing and availability. At this point, they really can't afford any bit of bad publicity.
