Despite an economic downturn, the shipments of handsets reached 282 million. Nokia retains its position as the top mobile phone maker by increasing its market share to 41 percent in the three months. The number two spot was also retained by Samsung Electronics in South Korea and U.S. handset maker Motorola remained in third place despite encountering several problems. The strong demand for mobile phones in emerging markets in Africa and Asia boosted the sales of Korean vendors LG and Samsung. If this trend continues then LG will overtake Motorola for the third spot. Strategy Analytics estimates that in the second quarter around 290 million handsets will be sold worldwide. |
