MOTOROLA MC55 - SMARTPHONE GO RUGGED

One of the latest models released by Motorola is the Motorola MC55, which they call EDA (Enterprise Digital Assistant). This handset is designed to withstand the rigours of daily business use. It is best suited for delivery workers and maintenance personnel who are usually in the field.

This smartphone with a rugged look is equipped with Wi-Fi and bluetooth connection, A-GPS support too. Unfortunately, the price is quite set higher at $1695. It is also much larger than you can see in the pictures. The main reason for the bulk is because this handset is desgined to be tough and withstand a fall onto the concrete floor from a height of 1.2m. It is also sealed to IP54 standard. It is protected against, dust, dirt and water spray (note: it's not completely waterproof). It is also quite heavy to carry around.

The Motorola MC55 has the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It has a full QWERTY keyboard as well as a numerical keypad. There's a button for turning on and off the screen's backlight to preserve battery light and there's also a lot of programmable buttons. The screen size of this rugged smartphone is 3.5 inches, which is larger compared to other smartphones. Good thing, the screen is pretty bright and responds quickly to stylus or finger presses. The internal memory of this device is just 128MB of flash memory and 256MB of RAM. However, you can expand this through the memory card slot located under the device's clip on battery pack. It can accomodate up to 8GB MicroSD cards.

Other features of this device includes:

- 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash
- Push-to-talk service
- Snap-on magnetic stripe reader
- 1D and 2D barcode scanners
- MP3/AAC music player
- Voice memo

One of the major downside of this phone is although it is quadband, it doesn't support 3G so connection speed is limited. Well, to use is to believe so you might want to give it a try.
