IS PALM WORKING ON A SMALLER WEBOS PHONE? POSSIBLY.

Palm has made pretty clear that webOS is the future of their mobile software platform for the next decade, with the Pree being only the first in a whole family of devices to run it. Speculation about when the Pre might arrive in stores continues churning, but the prospect of another smaller Palm device running webOS coming out this year? Now that's interesting.

The good folks over at TechCrunch have the scoop and it's currently spreading like wildfire all over the Internets.

It breaks down like this. Palm is said (according to "sources") to be working on a slimmer smaller webOS device with a Fall '09 launch target. Details beyond that are sketchy, so there's no specifics regarding whether it might have a physical keyboard; basically, you can't hang your hat on anything more than the new device being smaller and based on webOS.

With hype for the Pre through the roof and Palm still being mum on any price or date specifics as we rapidly approach their stated launch window of first half of the year, I wouldn't plan on getting any official word on this anytime soon. For now all we have it some rumors that may or may not be grounded in fact.

Still, can you imagine an even slimmer sexier webOS device coming out on a popular U.S. carrier just in time for the holiday shopping season (depressed as it may be)? Yup, me too.
