Earlier this month, Samsung unveiled what is widely being hailed as a smartphone revolution: the Samsung Jet. At a series of simultaneous launch events in London, Dubai, and Singapore, Samsung previewed this full-touch device to various journalists, debuting its tagline: “smarter than a smartphone”. Boasting both an attractive, sleek appearance and a processing powerhouse, this 3G smartphone possesses a wide array of features and functions. Most significantly is its pioneering 3.1 inch “16M WVGA AMOLED” display, which gives it the most vividly colorful display among full-touch handsets (480dpi). This gives the Samsung Jet a resolution four times higher than that of a WQVGA screen, and allows it to use 40% less energy than a phone with a TFT-LCD display (aiding its fairly long battery life – up to 492 min. talk time and 422 hours standby). Thanks to its 800MHz Accelerated Application Processor, this handset runs faster than most other smartphones. The Samsung Jet also includes a 3D cube-like user interface (Samsung’s TouchWiz 2.0) and one finger zoom. The array of handset colors that will be available upon release has not been announced yet. Internet browsing on the Jet is made relatively easy with Samsung’s in-house Dolfin browser, especially when browsing popular social networking sites. Users will be able to view up to five web pages at once and conduct multiple downloads simultaneously. The Dolfin Internet Browser also includes a built-in ad-blocker. The Samsung Jet offers Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB and Wi-Fi connectivity and an expandable memory of up to 16 GB via its microSD slot (buyers will choose from 2GB or 8GB internal memory). It measures 108.8 x 53.5 x 11.9 mm. Additionally, it has Motion Gate, which is a Samsung-developed technology that allows the user to browse their various multimedia files by tapping, tilting or flipping the handset. Other features include a 5MP camera, built-in GPS, DNSe and SRS Sound Effect technology, and DivX and XviD video support for downloading and viewing. “I want to create a clean design that is also user-friendly,” he said. “The main button at the bottom is inspired by the water element in the shape of an ice cube while the shape of the phone is easy to grip and the bigger LCD screen is useful for the various applications.” Said principal designer Lee Minhyouk. Samsung has yet to release information on potential North American carriers, pricing, or a release date for the Samsung Jet. Expect more information shortly. |

smartphone?
Although Samsung started out with the tagline 'smarter than smartphone' they cleverly changed that into 'touch the speed' as the smartphone tag is not really correct. The Jet is no smartphone, but is incredibly fast and clever and does approach smartphone functionality. So it's a matter of debate whether the phone is actually smarter than a smartphone.
