SPRINT WORLDPHONE TRULY UNLOCKED?
Submitted by Peppercorn on Mon, 10/27/2008 - 18:44.Bookmark/Search this post with: I have not become a sprint customer because I travel internationally a couple or several times a year and I like to have my data phone with me when I do and I like to make sure that it has international calling turned on. I have preferred T-mobile because it runs on a GSM network, something I find usefull when traveling abroad where GSM is native and being an international company (are they still owned by Doiche Telecom?) I think they do international plans better. However recently I was lured to the Sprint network by an employee phone offer (long story - can't be disclosed here) and their first truly international phone -the Blackberry 8830. I should also mention that I am a big fan of the Blackberries. What really surprised me is that the WorldPhone 8830 is supposedly unlocked by default. That is what I have read on some blackberry forums. Unforunatly I have just found out and I have not had a chance to test this myself. The other aspect of this sotry is that it is only unlocked for GSM use - so you can not use your Blackberry 8830 unlocked with Verizon or other CDMA carriers, but you should be able to pop a GSM sim card and use it as a GSM phone - internationally at least. My plead is the following - would anyone who had some experience, sucess or failure let me know swapping a new SIM card into your Sprint Blackberry 8830 worked in anohter country? Any, country - it doesnt matter. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. This site does not (yet) mention this "feature" in the Sprint Blackberry 8830 review.
