SYMBIAN PLAYS COPYCAT--PLANS TO ANNOUNCE ITS OWN APP STORE THIS FALL

The Symbian Foundation--suppliers of the OS for most major Nokia phones--is planning to jump in on the App Store fad and release their own entitled "Horizon" this fall. More information after the jump.

What is interesting about this announcement, however, is the fact that Nokia already has its Ovi app store available on its (ironically Symbian-powered) phones. Since the source of this information only states that they plan to announce this venue at some point in the future, there are few specifics detailed beyond the tidbit that AT&T and Samsung are joining Nokia as distribution channels of this new App Store. Symbian expects more companies to join in before its official announcement in October.

Will "Horizon" hold a candle to the Apple App Store, Blackberry, and Windows Marketplaces? Or will it sizzle like Nokia's-own Ovi store? We'll find out this fall.
