Have you had your same cell phone number before Cingular merged with AT&T and now you're thinking of switching providers but don't want to lose your number? You don't have to thanks to wireless number portability. It's an easy process and you can even transfer from landline to wireless. Let's find out how below!

Instructions Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Existing wireless number

1
Search for a new wireless plan.

2
Contact your newly selected wireless carrier and inform them that you want to port your existing phone number to your new plan.

3
When you receive your new phone you will be informed as to the status of when your number will be ported to your new phone. It's usually no longer than 24 hours.

4
After your number is ported to a new wireless carrier you will no longer be able to use your number with your old carrier.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some wireless carriers charge a number porting fee to recover the costs in transferring numbers while others may not charge a fee. Ask if the fee can be waived.
  • The FCC claims that a company cannot refuse to port a number because a customer has not paid the porting fee.
