It is important to use your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in the proper temperature range. The ideal operating temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F)2
It is also important to store your handset in the proper temperature. You may permanently damage your device if you store in under direct heat or sunlight. Store your iPhone in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F) 3
Never leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed the safe range. Leaving the device in your car might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.4
Avoid using certain applications while operating your iPhone in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time.5
Avoid using GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day because it might raise the iPhone's operating temperatures into dangerous levels6
You might see a temperature warning screen with the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it". When this happens you need to turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.
